The Death of Klinghoffer

I had written in a recent post:

Reagan recognized Islamic terrorism early on, and of course it remains a threat. Reagan’s moves against jihadists were always attacked in the media. For example, the jihadists who killed Klinghoffer (who are now being celebrated on Broadway) were nabbed in an astounding stunt that was later unraveled by leftist leaks.

DeckardCanine asked: “What Broadway show do you mean (so I can avoid it)?”

For background, this is from Wikipedia:

On October 7, 1985, four PLF militants hijacked Achille Lauro off Egypt. The hijackers had been surprised by a crew member and acted prematurely. Holding the passengers and crew hostage, they directed the vessel to sail to Tartus, Syria, and demanded the release of 50 Palestinians then in Israeli prisons. As many of the hostages were American tourists, U.S. President Ronald Reagan deployed the Navy’s SEAL Team Six and Delta Force to stand-by and prepare for a possible rescue attempt to free the vessel from its hijackers.[2]

On October 8, after being refused permission by the Syrian government to dock at Tartus, the hijackers murdered Leon Klinghoffer, a retired, wheelchair-bound Jewish American businessman, shooting him in the forehead and chest. They then forced the ship’s barber and a waiter to throw his body and wheelchair overboard. Klinghoffer’s wife, Marilyn, who did not witness the shooting, was told by the hijackers that he had been moved to the infirmary. She only learned the truth after the hijackers left the ship at Port Said. PLO Foreign Secretary Farouq Qaddumi later denied that the hijackers were responsible for the murder, and suggested that Marilyn had killed her husband for insurance money.[3]  … Achille Lauro headed back towards Port Said, and after two days of negotiations, the hijackers agreed to abandon the liner in exchange for safe conduct. They were flown towards Tunisia aboard an Egyptian commercial airliner.

Later, when the hijackers were being smuggled out of Egypt by air, the US intercepted the aircraft and forced it to land in Italy. Not mentioned by Wikipedia is that this raid was orchestrated by Oliver North. Intergovernmental intrigue resulted in the terrorists not being given to the US — and some were set free that night.

To The Guardian (in the UK), the most important thing to remember is that the Palestinian Liberation Front founder was nominally a Christian (and Marxist/Leninist). However, he was primarily an Arab racist and founder of the Aran Nationalism League, working tirelessly for decades for the destruction of Israel and the death of all Jews. In this, he sided with the Muslims who populated these groups.

The Guardian found a panel including an Israel-hating Jew to provide a positive take on the play, but they also quoted Rudy Giuliani:

“The Met and those who decide to go to see this production have every right to do so and it would be hypocritical and anti-American for us to interfere with them and to stop them,” said former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani. “We also have a right, just as strong and just as compelling, to point out the historical inaccuracy and historical damage this contributed to.”

He said that he has been an opera fan for 57 years and has seen more then 100 productions. He, unlike other protesters who deliberately avoid or have never seen the opera, owns the Klinghoffer CD and applauded its music. “I will continue to be a patron but with severe regret over this grave decision,” said Giuliani, who left the podium to the audience’s cheers of “four more years”.

My reply is below, but has been expanded somewhat from the original:

It is called The Death of Klinghoffer. Here’s an article complaining about all of the uproar and objections to this piece glorifying and excusing the jihadists:

The whole first act is given to the terrorists expounding on their righteous actions, in song, dialog, and soliloquy. And their right to be violent, of course, as the “oppressed people.”

The soon to be killed and dumped overboard Klinghoffer and his wife are the only Jews in the play, I understand. But he is given one bit of song and calls it correctly:

You don’t give a shit
Excuse me, about
Your grandfather’s hut
His sheep and his goat
And the land he wore out
You don’t give a shit
You just want to see
People die

And the writer of the article above was unhappy that when Leon Klinghoffer’s widow complained to the ship’s captain (who had been welcoming to the terrorists), she “sounded very much like the protesters outside (the theater).”

Oh, the poor critic (we are supposed to sympathize), having to endure such bad taste.
